Refridgerated Wagon VB629

VB 629 was built just after the Second World War to help modernise the railway system after years of austerity. It weighs 17 Ton and could carry 20 Ton of chilled meat. The wagon, a sole survivor of its type, features ice bunkers on the roof and bitumised cork insulation throughout. These wagons really marked the end-point for timber-clad bogie box-wagon development, a type that once dominated New Zealand freight transport.

Restoration work included replacing the corner posts, repairing rotten cladding and replacing rotten roof mouldings. The roof was re-sealed and made weather-tight, and the brakes were overhauled.

VB 629 is probably best remembered as the bright yellow storage wagon that lay beside the Rattray St road crossing for a number of years.
