Dunedin's Matchbox Railway
By J A Dangerfield
Published by NZ Railway & Locomotive Society Inc. (1986)
![]() This is the in depth story of the Dunedin, Peninsula and Ocean Beach Railway Company, and other Suburban transport ventures. The Company was formed in 1874 but had a short life before being declared bankrupt in 1883. However, subsequent owners managed to keep the line operating and the outer extremity survived until 1938. This is a fascinating account of how a shoe string railway survived with minimal traffic for more than 60 years, until overtaken by the new technology of electric trams, and the increased use of road transport.
