July/August News Update
Box wagon W840 following the removal of the side vent. Good progress continues to be made on the restoration of wagon W840. Following the removal of the old paint on a portion of the east wall and south end, extensive filling and sanding has been undertaken and the timber is now in primer. The door on that side has also received minor repairs. The large vent, fitted during the wagons time with Way and Works, has been removed and new cladding fitted. This job was more interesting than usual, as it was necessary to fit the replacement cladding between 2 sections of existing cladding, and the "original" cladding was of random widths varying up to 20mm. Progress is also being made on carriage A210 with 6 new roof beams now in place following the removal of 12 rotten ones. While the roof space is devoid of roof beams, the ceiling and clestory have had all the old paint removed, which is time-consuming but still easier than doing it once the new beams are in place. Two sub-standard rails on or near the 40lb points have been replaced, as has numerous badly corroded bolts, a sleeper and selected fastenings. A large quantity of spoil has been wheelbarrowed away from the site. While this track will still require replacement in the longer term, the repairs undertaken recently have improved safety margins in the interim. The tamper was used to good effect during this recent work. Currently paint is being stripped from the wheels and other components prior to repainting. Cattle Wagon T175 has had a door stay straightened and other minor maintenance as well as the sub-bleached paintwork on one side sanded back and repainted, often under very trying weather conditions. The air brakes are now being serviced in preparation for the Labour Weekend event. The motor on locomotive DS 203 has had a test run following its reassembly. The repairs were more drawn out than anticipated but the finished result seems very good. A recent running day proved extremely popular with large numbers of passengers carried throughout the day. Work on lapping in the valves on F111 is drawing to a close following painstaking work to remove the flaws in the mating surfaces. |
