March/April News Update
The refurbished roof on 1897 built box wagon K 610 received its covering in late March, marking the end of this stage. The A side door has had its framing repaired and is now ready for reassembly. A historical repair to the door was dismantled and reassembled using modern epoxy glue rather than the rusty old bolt that had been holding it together. Several other joints were out of alignment and had to be clamped and glued as well. The multitude of old nails, layers of paint and rotten timber were removed or stabilised as required. The next task is to repair the cladding on the back side of the wall prior to fitting the new cladding to the exterior. Local sheetmetal firm, Valley Industries, have kindly manufactured and donated a replacement door-track cover and door way plate. These have since been painted ready for installation, as has the original door track cover from the far side after panelbeating and patching. A section of the interior is now in primer following extensive sanding and filling. DS203 has had replica makers plates fitted. Maintenance work on its brakes are also nearly complete. The final major purchase of timber for the T175 (cattle wagon) project was made recently and the timber is now drying so it can be used later in the year. Work is continuing on the third main door; the frame is finished and the timber is being sanded and drilled prior to painting. Steam Locomotive A67 is undergoing its annual boiler survey early and having remedial work done to 12 tubes so that it can be used for a wedding in August. Installation of the new compressor on TR81 is now complete, successfully returning its capacity to the manufacturers original specification. Our recent 1950's day was a success despite very cold temperatures and rain. The event, organised to mark 50 years of service for DS203, saw a return to 2 train operation, motor cars of the era, period newspaper headlines, music and other paraphernalia combine to make the event memorable. A special handout was produced to aid visitors interpretation of the vehicles. Insulated Bogie Wagon VB629 has had some interior cladding reinstated and minor work on the floor and ceiling is under way. The bent front axle on WW6917 has been straightened by a local engineering firm, vastly improving its riding characteristics. Now that the brakes have been refurbished, little remains to be done on this restoration. |
